128 pieces, released January 28th on Foundation

Modulo emerges as a fusion of mathematics and aesthetics, a collaborative project by us, Rich Caldwell and Andrew Mitchell. In this unique artistic venture, the precision of generative art intertwines with the vivid reality of photography. Each piece in our curated collection showcases a blend of disciplines but also mirrors the organized complexity found in our world.

Our approach to capturing aerial photographs was methodical and artistically driven. We utilized satellite imagery to meticulously plan out each shoot, ensuring that every photograph aligned with our overarching artistic vision. This detailed preparation laid the groundwork for the unique aesthetic of the Modulo project.

We employ p5js, a versatile generative art tool, to transform these photographs. This process involves selecting segments of each image, shuffling them, and then strategically reapplying them to the original picture. This technique not only alters the imagery but also imbues it with a new, modular aesthetic.

Modulo's imagery draws parallels with urban landscapes seen in games like Sim City. Their organized chaos  reminiscent of computer chips.  It invites the viewer into a realm where the familiar becomes uncannily modular.

Our original photographs are stored on Arweave, ensuring permanence and accessibility.

PHOTOGRAPHY X GEN ART

Our Story

Rich Caldwell and I, Andrew Mitchell, first connected in late 2021 on Twitter. I was always fascinated by Rich’s work. His ability to transform the real world into abstract visions, turning the ordinary into the abstract, resonated deeply with me. His photographs were more than mere images. To me, they raised the question of whether human society was, in essence, a component of nature’s vast tapestry.

Rich’s aerial shots, in particular, struck a chord with me. Viewing the earth from above, one could perceive the world as a procedural canvas, marked by repetitive shapes and patterns scattered across a sprawling noise field. This perspective blurred the lines between the organic and the structured, fostering a new form of artistic expression.

Our collaborative journey officially began in 2022. I had the opportunity to contribute to Rich’s 12 Days of Art, an online showcase celebrating the work of digitally native artists. This experience served as a prelude to a deeper, more synergistic collaboration. The seeds of our artistic partnership were planted in this digital realm, paving the way for a fusion of our creative worlds.

While exhibiting Flowers of Alfiren at Art on Paper, I encountered a work by Didier Fournet that captured my attention. It opened my eyes to the endless possibilities of pixel manipulation as an art form. I realized I could do what Photoshop does but with code. This revelation was the catalyst for our first truly collaborative piece, No Diving.

In creating No Diving, I took one of Rich’s aerial shots of a pool and, using p5js, wrote a script that recursively masked, manipulated, and reflected the image onto itself. This process was not just about altering the image; it was about reimagining it, giving it a new dimension, a new meaning.

As our collaboration evolved, Rich introduced me to his recent endeavor – capturing the roofs of local buildings. From there, Modulo was born. Through our work, we aim to explore and redefine the boundaries of photography and generative art, inviting viewers to experience a world where reality and digital creativity merge.
